#04. Treatment of Insulin Resistance

Institutions such as the World Health Organization, American Diabetes Association, International Diabetes Federation are in the process of standardizing the therapy of type 2 diabetes and setting its specific goals. But the clinical reality proves that even with the best combinations of classical methods, the therapy goals are achieved in only 60% of patients.

What does this imply in terms of metabolic operations?

When using surgical therapy for non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, the regression rate is very high, which, depending on the method, can reach up to 90%. An important element in studying the effectiveness of surgery is the amount of insulin produced by the patient’s pancreas while determining insulin resistance. High insulin resistance paired with the patient’s own high insulin production allows for a good prognosis in the surgical treatment of diabetes. In this context, it is important to know that after about ten years of progression of diabetes mellitus, the reserves of the patient’s own insulin production decrease considerably, thus, reducing the chances for complete remission of diabetes mellitus.
