#01. Diabetes Therapy
Diabetes Mellitus type two is a disease commonly known as „diabetes”. It is counted among the so-called “civilizational diseases, as it continues to affect more and more people all over the world. In this video, I will briefly describe the possibilities of its surgical treatment. To begin with, the classical treatment of type 2 diabetes conventionally starts with the introduction of a diet, exercise and oral pharmacotherapy. Unfortunately, as it often happens, the disease continues to develop despite all these measures, and as a result, the patient needs to begin insulin therapy which, at times, fails to bring the desired effect either. At that point, metabolic surgery becomes an option.
Do therapies differ in the treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes?
Of course. Type 1 and type 2 are indeed two different diseases. Type 1 is characterized by a lack of insulin production, while the body affected by type 2 continues to produce insulin, but it fails to function properly. Metabolic surgery methods can only help patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with hyperinsulinemia. Type 1, on the other hand, is usually dealt with by transplant surgery.
Is classical diabetes treatment effective enough?
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease which gradually deteriorates the health of the patient. This process not only affects the endocrine system, but also negatively influences the nervous, circulatory, motor and mental state of the patient. The key component of the classical therapy is diet and exercise. But, as we all know, none of us is perfect, hence, conventional therapy tends to yield insufficient effects.
According to a number of studies, only 10% of the patients remained committed to diet and exercise for the period of 3 years. And as for the pharmacological treatment, it does not really change the course of the disease, but it remains indeed helpful when it comes to „saving dangerous situations”. However, if we want to achieve a truly effective change in patients with type 2 diabetes, we must use more radical therapies.
