#10. Surgeons specializing in metabolic surgery
We are committed to making sure the diverse needs of our patients are met, which is why we offer not only regular clinical consultation hours, but also video consultations, social media self-help groups, and email advice. We are there to support our patients in the adjustment period. So what happens when they are in the process of returning to their everyday life?
In the period directly following the surgery, the patients need to get used to a new way of eating, however, it usually only takes a few days to adjust to the changes. Occasionally, some patients report intermittent diarrhea during the first 3-4 months of adaptation.
Where was the operation first performed and how long has it been in use?
This surgical method was invented in Brazil. Brazilian surgeon Aureo De Paula performed this operation for the first time in 1999.
Where else is this surgery performed? What are the results in these countries?
This operation is currently performed by 12 surgeons in 9 different countries. The results show that all factors of metabolic syndrome are controlled more than 90%.
Do you exchange knowledge with your colleagues who use the same method?
There are organizations such as the GASRD (Global Association for Surgical Treatment and Research on Diabetes), where we share our data and experiences. In addition, there are annual international congresses and meetings.
In fact, every year, I participate in meetings organized at home and abroad where we promote this method of treatment of diabetes. In recent years, I gave presentations and speeches on the topic in India, Georgia, Spain, Italy, USA and Turkey. At the same time, we are currently working on the second edition of the book Fundamentals of Metabolic Surgery. I expect this theme to follow me throughout my entire professional life. My goal is to help as many people as possible enjoy a normal life again.
